UAE Residency Rules: How Long Can You Stay Outside the Country Without Losing Your Visa?

A clear guide for investors, entrepreneurs, and residents navigating UAE visa regulations.

This article provides a brief overview for investors and UAE residence visa holders regarding the maximum continuous period they may remain outside the country and the consequences of exceeding it. Understanding these regulations is crucial to maintaining valid residency status.

Standard Residence Visa Holders

Holders of standard UAE residence visas, which include employment visas and dependent visas, are subject to a strict limit of 180 consecutive days (six months) outside the UAE. Exceeding this period will automatically nullify the visa, rendering it inactive. To regain entry, the visa holder must apply for a Re-Entry Permit through the appropriate government channels, such as the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP). This application must be made while the person is outside the UAE and processing usually takes up to one week, and entry into the UAE is permitted only after the permit is approved. Attempting to enter the UAE without an approved re-entry permit will result in refused entry, and in some cases, the visa may be canceled entirely.

Partner and Investor Residence Visa Holders

In comparison to the standard rule, holders of Partner and Investor residence visas (non-Golden Visa) benefit from an extended allowance. They may stay outside the UAE for up to 1 year (12 months) without affecting the validity of their residency. However, this exception is not indefinite. Remaining outside the UAE beyond one year may still require the resident to apply for a Re-Entry Permit or could lead to visa cancellation, depending on the specific case and the discretion of immigration authorities.

UAE Golden Visa Holders

The rules are completely different for the UAE Golden Visa holders (typically 5 or 10 years). Individuals holding a Golden Visa are entirely exempt from all outside-UAE stay limits. They may remain abroad for extended or even unlimited periods without any impact on their residency status, provided their visa remains valid. Their residency will not be nullified due to prolonged absence.
